Low To Zero Energy Green Homes Are Getting More Affordable

Elkhart, Ind. —All American Homes, LLC recently announced major price rollbacks on its low energy use Solar Village® line of homes. “Our business philosophy has been to focus on making low energy use homes affordable for American families,” stated Rick Bedell, President of All American Homes. “We are constantly evaluating our product mix and making improvements to get the fastest payback for homeowners on their investment in a truly Green Home,” he explained.

Just how significant are the price cuts? According to Bill Martin, Director of Marketing for All American Homes, the retail base price of the homes have been reduced 16% to 20%, which equates to $25,000 to $41,000 depending on the model selected. “This means that for a small premium in price, a homeowner can enjoy a home that uses only a fraction of the energy used in an ordinary home, and in some cases as low as net zero. Plus there are also other green benefits like lower maintenance costs, sustainable materials, healthier indoor air, and greater comfort,” Martin stated.

What makes the Solar Village line so special? Each home begins with a passive solar design with a distinct south facing elevation. Window placements, awnings and natural landscaping recommendations are strategically used to maximize passive solar gain in the winter for natural heating and proper shading for natural cooling in the summer. Flooring and walls are designed with extra thermal mass to retain warmth in the winter, causing the furnace to run less and keep the home cool in the summer using less energy for air conditioning.

The building envelope is 2” x 6” construction with Icynene® foam insulation to reduce air infiltration to near zero. A half-inch rigid foam panel helps prevent thermal bridging at the studs and fiber cement siding finishes the exterior, which looks fantastic and carries a 50 year warranty. Since Solar Village homes are built incredibly tight, a Fantech® whole house ventilation system is used to introduce filtered and tempered fresh air into the home at a rate of three complete air exchanges per hour.

On top of each Solar Village home is a standard 2.5 kw solar panel system that generates free electricity from the sun. Net metering, available in most states, means your electric meter will run backwards any time the home generates more electricity than it is using. An on-demand tankless hot water system provides an unending supply of hot water and uses little to no energy when not in use. Compact fluorescent bulbs throughout the home can use about 75% less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs.

The green and sustainable features don’t stop with the home. According to the Modular Building Institute, the modular construction process itself creates 40 percent less waste than traditional construction. Since your home is built indoors it is never exposed to rain in the controlled environment of our state-of-the-art factories. Materials are kept safe and dry in our warehouses, rather than delivered to the job site and exposed to weather, vandalism and theft on the job site.

More and more architects, developers, state and national officials are turning to modular construction for it’s inherent green practices and the quality and speed of construction. This is evident by All American Homes’ construction of the Smart Home: Green + Wired home on display at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, the Living Zero Energy Tour home currently touring the nation under the direction of the United States Department of Energy, and its recent completion of the near net zero energy homes for the Paradigm Project for the Boulder County Housing Authority in Colorado. All American Homes sister company, All American Building Systems, is also a major supplier of barracks to the U.S. military with over 1 million square feet of LEED Silver ready barracks on the ground.
